The Lake: The Plan

Tucking a wisp of hair behind her ear, Hallie tossed aside her History of Magic book and leaned against the oak tree with a loud sigh. A slight wind rustled through leaves and swirled around her, forcing pieces of parchments and quills to scatter from her bag. Hallie watched but didn’t move to retrieve her things. Her brown slid across the grass onto the shimmering Lake. In the distance, she spotted a few mermaids playing with their grindylows. At least that’s what she assumed they were playing with from the looks of the slimy green monkey like creature. Then again she could be wrong, after all Care of Magical Creatures wasn’t her strongest subject. In fact, nothing was her strongest subject.

As a feeling of self pity washed over her, Hallie dropped her head into her hands for a few seconds. She didn’t know what she was thinking in the Great Hall. There was no way she could attract someone like Tristan to her side. Peering into the water, Hallie critiqued her looks. Petite in form, long brown hair, brown eyes, pert nose, and rosebud lips. Who was she kidding? There was nothing remarkable about her looks, not to mention she was very shy at nature. In fact, the only people who knew the real her was Nora and Sara. Not even her family knew what she was like inside.

“What am I doing?” Hallie asked herself as she tossed a tan pebble into the lake only to have the giant squid peek up to angrily gurgle at her. “The wizard world is practically at war. People are in a turmoil as their loved ones goes into hiding or turn up dead. I should be helping, but all I’m doing is sitting here worrying about Tristan’s affections?” Hallie leaned back once more and repeated loudly. “What am I doing?”

Yawning to himself, Alex hitched his bag onto his right shoulder and started jogging toward the glen. Although there were plenty of people out to hang out with, and as people he meant girls, he felt he needed to rest a bit before heading to his Herbology class. As the willow trees surrounding the glen came into view, a relaxed grin creeped into his face. Yet Alex could have sworn he heard something. Slowing his pace, he heard the distinct sound of someone talking. Recognizing the voice as Hallie’s, he stopped on his tracks debating whether to interrupt her.

Unconsciously Alex couldn’t help but overhear her conversation with what seemed to be with herself for the moment. Listening to her words, his grey eyes softened a bit as he too knew the feeling of being out of place. Knowing Hallie since childhood, Alex knew how much she wanted to fit in and make her parents proud. Ironically as Alex didn’t care about that as he felt nothing he did would have made a difference, he was sorted into Ravenclaw. Something that Hallie had been dreaming of forever. And as their time at Hogwarts grew to an end, Alex knew that there were very few times of laughter up ahead in their future as the wizard world seemed to grow darker with each passing day.

Making a decision, Alex crept up behind Hallie and plopped right down next to her with his trademark carefree grins. “Talking to yourself now?” He shook his head sadly, hoping to cheer her up a bit. “You know that’s the first sign of madness.”
